This image was taken on the 4th of July back in 2003, the day of the annual Mount Marathon Race, which takes runners up to the top of this mountain and back into the town, for a total of 4 strenuous miles. It’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. I was perched about 3/4 of the way up the mountain when the race began, perched on a tiny rock which kept my ass from sliding 200 feet down to the tree line below. The trail is so steep that all of the “runners” are essentially using their arms to push against their legs to get up the hill.

Some of the characters who posed for me in this race ended up being my best photos of the trip. This fucking guy right here, shirtless — but wait! Is he using his nipple piercings to hold his race bib on?

This vacation was one of my inspirations for eventually taking the plunge to go “all in” with my photography. Obviously it took awhile. One fun thing about having all these images in the drawer for over a decade are the faces and responses from people when they see them after all these years!
