THE STORY

This image goes way back to my original interest in photography in 1996. Pittsburgh used to host some pretty spectacular cycling races, and back when I was in art school, the Thrift Drug Classic was the main event. A lot of you cyclists might note that the Thrift Drug Classic as one of the first times Lance Armstrong cheated his way onto the podium, but this year he was absent from the race. Later that year he would be diagnosed with testicular cancer and have one of his balls removed because of all the damage caused from the hormones he’d been taking.

Notable about this race was an appearance from Andy Hampsten, of which I was able to get a photo. Andrew is an American former professional road bicycle racer who won the 1988 Giro d’Italia and the Alpe d’Huez stage of the 1992 Tour de France. And he got to keep those trophies to this day.

Here you see a group of racers rounding the turn from Grandview Avenue onto the downhill section of the P. J. McArdle Roadway. I find it interesting to look at how much the city changes over time when going back to these old images. The “Mellon” building (which I’ll always call it) was one of the only buildings in town with a corporate logo plastered onto it.
