THE STORY

A bright yellow and black spider hanging in its web along Paseo del Morro in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I was walking around with my daughter who was 7 at the time. If you’ve ever been to San Juan and spent any time there, you know how crazy the stray animal situation is down there. Chickens running wild through the streets, along with dogs and even a stray horse. Yes, we saw a stray horse roaming the streets.

While trying to keep my daughter from petting the 30+ “rabies kitties” who started following me like I was the pied piper (or had all the mice in my camera bag) I saw this wild looking spider hanging in a web next to me. So of course I let her go play with the kitties while I snapped a few images with a macro lens.

I’ve never seen any spider like this before or since. I have absolutely no idea what it is. I’ve yet to be able to identify it looking through images on the internet.

Old San Juan is the oldest settlement within Puerto Rico and the historic colonial section of the city of San Juan. The settlement is a National Historic Landmark District and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the “Zona Histórica de San Juan” (English: San Juan Historic Site).
