The View of Slippery Rock Gorge From Cleland Rock in McConnell’s Mill State Park — Pennsylvania.
It was a really muggy, crummy day for taking photos overall, but I was hiking around McConnells Mill State Park in Pennsylvania on a hot July afternoon and decided on a whim to go hang out at Cleland Rock — one of the only scenic overlooks in the Slippery Rock Gorge. The thing about hiking in Pennsylvania is that for the most part, you’re surrounded by trees and rocks. Occasionally you end up with a natural viewpoint — or in some cases a “manicured” natural viewpoint. I am not sure which one of these Cleland Rock falls into.
It is one of the more seldom seen areas of the park because of the lack of signs, isolation, and rutted dirt road leading back to the overlook.
The overlook is never really spectacular, and I originally thought it wasn’t going to yield any good images — however the view on this day was better than usual. The thick haze in the atmosphere created much more depth in the scene than you normally see. Instead of a fairly flat looking scene, you can really see the individual folds of the landscape as they disappear into the distance, each one becoming more blue in tone.
I currently live about 15 minutes away from this spot, and since I moved into my current home I’ve made several stops at this rock trying to get a better photo, and so far all I’ve managed to do is break an expensive Nikon lens on Cleland Rock itself.
